h-n-y twenty ten

Plans changed, and I am staying in Minneapolis for the New Years, so all hundreds of you who invited me to parties and shin-digs, please...stop.....

I'll update "ya'll" on my trip when I get back to Canada-land. But for now I say:

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010!!!

fröhliches weihnachten!

Here's one for you: what falls from a significant height, smashes your foot, and causes instant pain, bruising, and a bump?

No no, it's a frozen block of cream cheese.

That's just the beginning of my Christmas festivities! Christmas was quite different this year. Sister #1 and the bro-in-law couldn't make it out to Canada for the holidays this year and sister #2 couldn't come in from Winnipeg until this morning, so my Christmas Eve felt interesting: I had no siblings to spend my Xmas eve with this year... But sister #2 came home this morning with her boyfriend and we did the whole gifty thing with a huge supper feast in the evening that my gran's came over for as well.

By the way, my dad used a real knife to carve the turkey in case you were wondering (insert slow clap here)...

Despite sister #1 not being here, my family and I are going down to visit them in Minneapolis/St. Paul. So, with the (American) cash gift from my parents and a U.O. at my finger tips at the MOA........you can imagine the rest.

Now, what to do for New Years.... Any suggestions? Invites? Exciting events you can dangle in front of me?

home again

Well, this girl's back at her parents place for the holidays, but only after a weekend of FUN!

Yesterday was Patti and Graham's wedding which was one of the BEST weddings I've been to (I haven't been to many, but still..). It was so great just hanging out and dancing with everyone. I think going to bed at 3am after a huge party, party (thanks Manny for getting that in my head ha) takes a toll on someone who's sick as I was out cold until my parents called me in the morning...wait...it was 12:30..

As we speak my mum has chicken noodle soup brewing on the stove ready to heal my little self. Although I think the two cookies I ate already started the process, they are my favourite: oatmeal apricot with icing glaze....don't judge it before you try it.
Fun (random) Fact of the day: For some reason, I've always wanted an I ♥ NYC t-shirt. I plan on making this dream happen one day. Unless someone wants to get me one :)

holly-daze

Well, I can officially say that I have completed my last assignment of my semester before the Christmas break. Sent it into the prof approximately 10 minutes ago! Shoot- that feels good. I can't say that I'm home free yet since there are 3 exams waiting to destroy my life (boooo). Nah, I'll show them...

I can't wait for the break to officially start. It has been so crazy these last few weeks that I've just slowly been shutting down. It's sometimes really difficult to get into the swing of Christmas out in the boonies here. I make my small attempts tho. I put up my xmas lights last week (they make my cozy little home COZIER!), I ate a candy cane yesterday (it was definitely old and and soft, but still delish), and I've already listened thru all of Handel's Messiah and John Michael Talbot's christmas album (he's a monk, laugh, but I just love it haha).

Every Christmas, my 2 sisters, mom, and I watch White Christmas together (normally my oldest sister Andrea makes homemade eggnog which is way better than bought anyday). I've got a few songs from the movie on my iTunes, except they're recorded by Bette Midler...if anyone knows who that is haha. One of the songs is practically my sisters and my theme song....it's called....."Sisters." Sister #2 and I actually sang it at sister #1's wedding reception for kicks a few years back. So good haha.

Anyway, I can't wait to go home and eat all sorts of hors d'oeuvres with the fam.

Gotta start my xmas shopping...crap.

hobs 2.0

So, remember when I said I needed a new hobby? Well, this evening I attempted something with my buddy Ruth....I painted! haha. Definitely tried to set the mood to let the artist in me blossom: had some chill music, scented candle burning, and had a glass of wine. Let me just say, my skills need to be honed a bit better (aka I paint like crap), but here's my feeble attempts at bringing out the Picasso, Rembrandt, O'Keefe, and Monet out in me:

sweet disposition

This song by the band The Temper Trap was on the soundtrack for the movie "500 Days of Summer" and I love it. It is best played in one's iPod pumping while walking in the dark through the woods on a deserted, snowy road lit only by the moon...purely hypothetical......................

But seriously.

11/26/2009

blonde

Just a funny moment I just barely had: as I sat here fb-ing, a song came on my iTunes shuffle that happens to be my ringtone on my phone. I jumped up and got all excited that I had a phone call!

A disappointing, yet hilarious, false alarm.

Ah well, at least I got to hear the whole song rather than just the first 30 seconds of it.

such is life

Really long time since I've posted! Life's been busy, what can I say! You probably are wondering how my previously hyped up trip to Florida went! Well, I'm not telling you.....

Nah, I'm kidding.

It was good. In terms of volleyball, I was a little disappointed with the outcome. We ended up placing 6th out of 10 (boo). I honestly believed we should have made at least top 4. But we did manage to pull off a win against the 3rd ranked team (a team from Kentucky). The last game was an emotional loss for me, being finished my volleyball career and all after four years with my team and having gone into that game completely, and whole-heartedly believing that we'd continue onto the next day (only top 4 teams could continue on after round robin). So, having my hopes dashed kind of sucked...a lot. BUT, I'm okay. Life goes on, I had fun, I got to go to Nationals in my final year....in Florida! Florida was wonderful. I lovd the sun, the beach, the fresh air, the bronzing of my skin...in mid-November.
Now, onto the next part 0f my post: Lights! Yep, I went to the Canadian artist Lights concert. I'm going to be honest, this summer a co-worker of mine was obsessed with her and I could not help but tease. But, I got the album and actually quite enjoyed it. So, a few of us (Manny, Jennie, and Cam) ended up going to the concert in Winnipeg last night. Maybe Manny will put up some videos that he recorded? She's not my favourite artist of all time, but the concert was pretty sweet! I liked the opening band too, Jets Overhead. I could appreciate them in my Shuffle Perfection playlist. I'll tell you that when my song "Face Up" came on, I got a little.....a lot...excited, kind of like the battalion of teeny-boppers there (with their little copy-cat Lights headbands). Ironically, she wasn't even wearing a headband at the concert last night. Teeny-boppers didn't get the memo. Lights team, how many headband-ers did we actually end up counting?? 712? 713?

Give or take a few...
But now it is back to school, homework, and (now that volleyball is over) basketball.

C'est la vie.

10/31/2009

heart of a champion

I don't even know where to begin on this post. I am in the highest of high spirits ever! My volleyball team has just won Regionals for the 2nd year in a row (only the 3rd time in our school's history) and are headed for Nationals in Florida!!
Throughout our season, my team struggled with staying consistent and staying mentally stable. With such a fresh, young team it was quite typical. Despite our struggles, I still had faith that my team had something hidden inside them that could be brought out. I just prayed it would come out before it was too late! I can say to you right now, I could not be more proud of my girls as they stepped up and played their hearts out on that court all weekend without giving up. They pulled out those special "something"s hidden away and then some! I felt like a proud mother :) We were a completely different team...the team that was hiding was who we really are!
So, now that I sit here (caressing the significantly large, red 2009 Regional banner), I am pulling up old mental (and .jpg) files of my time in Florida last year with volleyball and how wonderful it felt to have the warm sun on my face whilst the rest of the people in my life shivered in the Northern autumn chill (slightly devilish of me...nay, it's honesty).
Thanks to everyone for the support and in 10 days, I'll be on a jet plane (with the soccer guys! Woohoo on their Regional win too!!).

Ciao~

dreams should come true

Weird. Last night I had a dream about me owning some huge, comfy over-sized sweaters. Coincidently, today in my email, I got an update from Urban Outfitters about their new stock of SWEATERS. It is fate, I must have. Considering my little apartment is consistently an icebox, I think it's only fitting (pun kind of intended).
Also, 1 month countdown until I see Lights live in Winnipeg. My favorite song off her album The Listening would have to be Face Up. It's so epic sounding :)

Was reeeeally hoping to go see Moulin Rouge at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet this weekend, but I doubt that will happen...haven't bought a ticket yet. So sad :'(

Fourthly, saw Law Abiding Citizen yesterday. More gory than I thought, but definitely kept me wanting to know what happens!

On a final note.....I freakin' LOVE CANADA!!! I just got word today that the government has given me another Canadian Millennium Bursary to go towards paying back my ghastly amounts of students loans!! This one's even bigger than the last!! O CANADA!!! I'm in love...

Mad Women

So Cam wanted to see everyone "Mad Men'd" (create yourself in the caricature of the show Mad Men). I suppose this is the best I could come up with. Don't know who the mystery man is I'm tappin' martini's with there is, but I look awesome. Except I know I'm not that skinny :) Who cares, I created it, it's my fantasy hehe.

I'm thankful for pillows on roadtrips

I believe I should be working on an English paper right now, but alas, mindless writing seems to trump...

Thanksgiving weekend -- awesome.

Started it out with a volleyball trip down to the wonderful world of the US of A. First game, we stopped in Bemidji and played against a team that shouldn't touch a volleyball; it pains me to think that someone can actually ruin a sport (at the college level) that everyone says is "easy and lame" in the first place (it's awesome, by the way). Needless to say, beat them 3 straight WITHOUT our setter who sprained her ankle earlier. After the game, we continued on towards Minneapolis....but...not without any hitches...

DEER.

Hit one. Yep. Tumbled to it's death (not us, the deer). I ended up making copious amounts of phone calls (Minneapolis hotel, St. Cloud hotel, spoke to the NCU athletic director, etc. etc., oh, and my coaches mom). I'll be expecting a nice cheque from the school to cover roaming charges... It's difficult driving a car when the bearings are out of place. Took the driver (coach) and me to both yank on the wheel to turn the poor vehicle. Ended up pushing our games back and hour and a half cuz we had to stay in St. Cloud rather than Minnie for the night. We made it. Played our games. Beat NCU. Lost to Faith (damn).

Made it back to Canada in time to celebrate 50% of my Thanksgiving holiday weekend with my sisters (one who was out from...ironic...St. Paul/Minneapolis). Had too much pie and early Halloween candy (ow, my tummy). Saw my fam. Did some laundry.

Aaaaaand...weekend over.

But not before I watched "The Talented Mr. Rippley"....can you say bizarre?

Also, as a tribute to Thanksgiving, please watch this video. Too funny and true:

Hobs

I need a new hobby-

Any suggestions?

10/01/2009

It's that time of year again...

It is the first day of October. October means that it is fall. It means Thanksgiving is right around the corner, it means Halloween is coming soon, it means cooler weather (no snow yet, but definitely cooler) with the changing of the leaves and the sharp, crisp rains.

I am feeling really nostalgic today. I don't know what exactly triggered it, but I have been thinking back to my childhood all day today. Fall has been one of my favorite seasons for a long time. A couple of summers ago, I moved out of my childhood home that I grew up in. I hardly am ever "home" anymore because I've got my own life out at school in my little apartment. As I sit here in my room, I'm watching the rain hit my window and run down (like in the movies, ya know?) and can't help but start to feel a deep sense of missing for my old childhood home. When I say old, it's not necessarily just a word I'm throwing in there. No, this house was really old. It had so much character, it was moved from an army base before it was moved to my town and I can't help but wonder a lot what might have happened in that house before me. It was such a wonderful place to sit and enjoy days like these cold, wet autumn days. I would curl up in a blanket with my slippers by the old brick fireplace (yeah, real fireplace with real wood) while my parents had some classical favorite on of the day (quite possibly Handel's Messiah or the likes) and watch the rain. Well, I don't have a fireplace in my little apartment, but here I sit with my blanket and slippers sipping on some hot chocolate (wishing desperately for some fireplace to pop up as my landlords haven't seemed to turn the heat on yet) listening to Mr. Handel's works.
Speaking of Handel's Messiah, I also can't help but miss the times when I was just a little girl sitting around the table on Sunday with a hearty meal of steak and wine with my sisters and me making up our own words to Handel's tunes (they were pretty great). I think back to the times when life was so easy. No hard decisions to make, living the innocent life of a child (I use the word innocent with discretion, but you know what I mean). October is also still early in the new school year. New school years used to mean one new outfit, new pencil crayons, new runners, seating arrangements, walking down the hall single file, and those awesome desks you could hide things in (imagine if we still had to sit in those things). I love being an independent person living on my own, going to college...but there are simply some things that were just super. Today I was watching The Price Is Right (weird, I know) and there was this giant cartoony picture of a honey comb. The memory hit me so hard: computer class in grade 1 or 2 where we still worked on MS-Dos computers and there was this honey comb game that you learned math and spelling on! Oh man, was that ever fun. Oh to be a child again and computer games were so simple...I wouldn't be surprised to hear of 5 year olds playing Halo to learn math...

Perhaps all these memories are triggered by the fact that it's almost Thanksgiving. Last year I missed Thanksgiving as I was in Florida for a volleyball tournament. I mean, Thanksgiving happens at the same time whether I'm in Canada or not, but I missed the family festivities back home. I think this really made me really aware of how important and how "thankful" I am for occasions like it. I missed hanging out with my family (in my favorite season), both immediate and extended (I really miss my grandmas), I missed the huge spread of dinner on the table (turkey or not), and dang it, I would've killed for a slice of my grandma's famous chiffon pumpkin pie. This year I have to miss half of my Thanksgiving weekend again due to a volleyball trip to Minneapolis, but I am excited to be able to spend that second stretch of it home with all those memories that I've been missing lately.
I just need my fill, then I'll be good to go for another year. Although, that pie could stick around all year....

Okay, this was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing. Yet I was very impressed.

Mmmmmuffins!

I just made the most amazing muffins today. Strawberry-Banana, of course with cinnamon. Needless to say my apartment smelled like heaven. Just wanted everyone to know, 'cause my domestic skills are starting to take some serious shape!

discovery

Found this song, it's super catchy! The band Discovery is indie pop, but this song "Swing Tree" has hints of Latino beats, too. If you are familiar with Vampire Weekend, the singer Rostam Batmanglij is from that band and other singer Wes Miles is from Ra Ra Riot. The video isn't a music vid, but just the song. Enjoy!

Good Luck Mr. Denture!

Alright, so for the summer I'm working as a Summer Events Coordinator for 2 radio stations, CKMW and The Eagle. My job entails me to go out and about to different events and fairs throughout the Pembina Valley and give away free water and seeds and take entries to my free draw and do live reports on-air. I have the "opportunity" to meet all sorts of people. Now, I meet some really nice people that make the job worth it where I can have some friendly conversations (my small talk is impecable already...I seem to use the same lines over and over and over....). However, I learned something else about my job that wasn't in the job description: I'm a therapist?! Let me tell you about Mr. Denture....

I was at a Farmers Market. So I'm standing there, doing my thing, and this man, oh late 60's early 70's (old enough to wear dentures, hence the name "Mr. Denture") comes up. I say my usual thing about entering my draw, and "help yourself to some free Spitz and water." "Oh no, I don't eat seeds, they get caught in my dentures you see..." was his response. So he starts talking about the conflict of dentures verses seeds. Riviting. He starts talking about how he can't buy anything here. If he had a wife, she would buy things, he says. Nonchalantly he adds that she left him for her boyfriend. Ah-what? He proceeds to ask me if I'm news. Do we get a lot in the news about abuse? He proceeds to name all the sorts of abuse: "Ya know, some men beat their wives? They slap them, punch them, kick them, call them names, rape them..." My response? I simply state that some women do it to their husbands too. Pfft, what the heck am I supposed to say? He goes on to say how embarrassing this is (what he's about to tell me), that he's had women in his life and they've all left him. And he says, "and I didn't abuse any of 'em." This, yes this, is where I begin to start looking around, is anyone else seeing this??? He starts tearing up with a quivery voice! I tell him it's not too late to keep looking for a woman. He says, no, he's given up thinking he's not worth it. I tell him that's foolish, he should never think he's not worth it. He continues to tell me about all the land he owns and his 3 cars and his 4 bedroom house. Again, I say it's not too late to find a lady friend. Again, he's not worth it. Well, you don't need a woman to be happy! I say. But it sure does get lonely... Well, Mr. Denture, get yourself some bachelor friends! I don't have many friends... Get some! Get yourself out there! Stay positive! I don't really remember much after that, he slowly walked away after telling me he told our city mayor to get off his property....

To say the least, it was quite the experience. I thought about making an excuse to get him to leave me alone, but my little self told me, this guy just needed someone to talk to.

Good luck Mr. Denture!

BBC

So I got back from a week holiday in Beautiful British Columbia. I flew out with my sister Friday morning, with a 2.5 hour layover in Calgary. As I sat in the airport waiting, I had a great view of the Calgary skyline...gosh, I sure do love a good skyline. The flights there were pretty decent. I love WestJet and how they can crack jokes, rather than be all serious. To quote the flight attendant: "If you have any questions or concerns, please keep them to yourselves as we've had a long day and really don't care..." Also, I plan on never sharing a flight with too many children again: "I. Want. A. WINDOW....SEAT!!!!!" Wow...
I arrived on time to change and somewhat make myself presentable for my cousin's rehearsal dinner as we were originally out there for his wedding. His fiancé was there, oh yes, but I didn't even meet her until AFTER the wedding! Anyway, the wedding was fine. Very traditional, bride and groom looked gorgeous (of course). At the reception afterwards, there was a dance. Seriously, if I had ever wondered what it would be like to be at a Napoleon Dynamite dance, this just cleared all curiosity. The WORST dj's ever hahah. Most definitely stuck in the old age...and not just music style...appearance style. Desite! I did a mighty fine tribute to Michael Jackson, if I do say so myself.
After some time spent in Abbotsford (where the wedding, etc was), we headed up through Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay where we took a 40 minute ferry ride and then drove another hour up the coast to a cabin-y resort where we were in a bay that had high tide and low tide. If you're curious, click here...this is where we were-ish. It was a decent time. I spent my time in the hammock next to the hot tub (yep, a hot tub) on the lower porch (that's right, there were two porches) with a book over looking the bay. I went kayaking and caught a starfish (which I touched for the first time...was NOT an easy task that my cousin did trying to convince me to touch it) and I also caught a jellyfish. Interesting blobby creatures...

I could go on with a few stories, but who wants to read an essay during the summer? All in all, BC is a gorgeous place. Flying over mountains was incredible. However, when it comes to mountain driving...I'll stick to the prairies. I swear we went upside down sometimes...

Mama Time

Yesterday was Mumsie's day. Usually it's spent with a nice dinner, flowers, cards, small gifts (I got my mom a sexy purple scarf). This mother's day was a lot more fun than usual. My sister came out from Winnipeg (yay!!) so she kept me company on our family dinner (with my 2 gramma's) at the golf course restaurant in the neighbouring town. Can I say that it was the most HILARIOUS dining experience of my life!

The server = clearly her first serving job and often made me wonder if it was her first social experience too. (Who asks how the food is when we don't even have plates in front of us!?)

The flower guy = came around giving out carnations to all the mom's. **Word of advice for all you guys out there...if you are going to buy a woman a flower, DO NOT BUY CARNATIONS!! They are the cheapest flower you can buy...it's a nice gesture, but really...** Anyway, this flower guy clearly was a nerd in high school and this was his chance to get the ladies attention that he never got :) Sorry buddy.

Many other things went on to cause me and my sister to practically pee our pants laughing (or trying not to) from the smoker voice lady saying "hello" to the extremely frazzled lady running the buffet. Our table conversation turned into talking about my gramma's and mom's past flames. Found out an interesting story about my gramma....think maybe I'll write a book about her soap opera life! Haha.

But, when all's said and done, the time's I really value is when I can just chill with my mom and share stories and crazy laughs. My mom, sister, and I curled up together on our guest bedroom bed and had wine and just talked about girl things. Not interesting for you guys, but these are mother-daughter moments that really make life awesome and show your mom in a whole new light. My mom is just a teen girl at heart. I love her.

*pic of my mom on halloween years ago lol*

My "Aha!" moment

So I haven't started that sugar challenge yet. But here's the scoop: I don't think I'm going to do that anymore. Wanna know why? Not because I've chickened out, but simply because being healthy is about a whole lifestyle, not just giving up sugary products (although cutting back on the quantity is a good start). I'm trying to avoid eating after 8:00 and I'm guzzling water throughout the day. I've been going for runs (just did 20 minutes today). I did yoga yesterday (and I could definitely feel it today...a little stiff). I'm bumping up my fruit and veggie intake. Maybe I'm just thinking about all this because it's summer and bikini season is riding my ass...or perhaps I have September looming before me with the unitard's staring me down from a distance... You're probably thinking "Well, duh Jill...you should always be thinking like this..." Yes, but sometimes one gets these epiphany's and it really clicks.... I guess this is my Oprah-style "Aha!" moment :)

Sweet-aholic Rehab

So, I was watching Oprah today and Jenny McCarthy was on there (she's Jim Carry's wife). She was talking about doing this 30 day challenge of giving up sugar. Ironically enough, I was called a sweet-aholic in the past couple of days hehe. So get this, my mom and I are going to try this whole 30 day challenge and not have refined sugar things for a month! This includes candy, ice cream, non-natural fruit juices, and even cake :( Oh boy this is going to be hard, but I am actually excited to see what happens! Besides, I have to think about September when I have to fit into my volleyball spandex (aka unitard) once again.

I haven't decided when I'm going to start (my mom and I say after we've finished all the sweet things in the house hahaha) but I hope soon!

I am going to keep you all posted on my slow withdrawl into insanity once I begin :)

Boys and Ball

Time to shine boys! haha.

Anyway, my basketball season is over and I am very sad. It was a super rough season...as in we really didn't win. But overall, I'm super glad that I played. It was a good experience. Why? Because I love basketball and one would do pretty much anything for the love of the game....including play on a team that doesn't win. And I developed myself as a player in more ways than one. So, I gotta be grateful for that.

Also, I'm getting a job at a radio station. Listen for my voice! hahaha! So weird....

The Musical is BACK!

I love musicals and I've always wanted the musical to make a comeback...but not crappy cheesy ones like "From Justin to Kelly"...if you know what I'm sayin'. I love the classic can-can girls and dancing men in tuxes. I saw this on the Oscars last night...LOVED IT. I definitely have a new respect for Hugh Jackman. Please enjoy this...you'll appreciate it more if you recognize the musicals being represented.

I'm sure we all can relate to this in some way. I seriously laughed so hard when I watched this. Maybe it's just because I feel like some of the lines said were definitely part of my life growing up! lol.

This isn't the most exciting music video, but I really love this band and this song. However, this vid does make me wanna take off on a road-trip with my friends. Anyone down??

Cass Bird

So I'm taking a photography course this semester. I have a feeling I won't get a chance to really learn how to become a great photographer, but I still have always had a love for great photographs. I'm a big fan of photographs that have people in them, but with the candid/un-posed look (even if they are posing, they look like they're not...know what I'm sayin'?). I discovered a really good photographer named Cass Bird. Some of her photographs are a little scandalous ha, but I really like a lot of her stuff. Perhaps someday I can be good like her. She does a lot of black and whites (so classic). I think if you can learn how to really work black and white photographs, you can rock coloured photographs. I really like a lot of her style.
Take a look at some of her stuff: http://www.cassbird.com/.
