O [dominion of] CANADA

Now that they're over, I've realized the entire time that the 2010 Winter Olympics have been on, I don't think I've blogged about it once. Man, there is so much I could say about it, but I'm going to keep this simple:

I love the Olympics. And I LOVE CANADA.
I don't care what some people say that it's "fake pride" for Canada during this time. So maybe not everybody is sporting the red and white flags painted on their faces every day of the year, but this is a time where people can show their pride for CANADA.

CTV, you are good at making things seem so epic with all your montages! Tear jerkers...

I didn't get any of the special Olympic gear that HBC was selling :( Of all the things being sold, I wanted this sweater the most:
It's so awesome. I WANT.

I watched as much as I could during these games, but the men's gold medal hockey game of Canada vs. USA happened to be on while I was on my way home from a basketball trip. So...of course we stopped where we could on the drive to watch!! That meant sitting in an AMERICAN truck stop for an hour! It felt a little awesome rooting for Canada so patriotically on American soil. I was personally hoping we'd get to stop at a place like Applebee's where we could get chirped by some beer-sippin' American's, but then sweetly smile at them in a polite Canadian way as we file out after with a "W" :)

By the way, if you remember from a previous post in January, I saw the women's Canadian hockey team beat USA in a pre-Olympic game in Minneapolis. Apparently our ladies beat them in the gold medal game as well?

So...I practically saw that gold medal game.
And thanks to Brian Williams for the final bout of shivers while he said his final words: "Thanks for watching. Good night from Vancouver."

forgetting sara marshall's on tv right now...

Some of you may have read in Lenards blog that she and I and our buddy Meg-o are going on a little roadie to Fargo to do some wardrobe re-vamping. I love Target. Oh, and why not throw in some volleyball watching too while we're at it? Ok. I better find a new pair of jeans...
I'm down in Iowa right now for my final basketball road trip, but we're on our way back to Canada-land tomorrow. Kind of glad because I got some sort of stomach flu Friday morning. I was so fainty feeling and nauseous. Wasn't going to even play, but team needed me, so I played. Yikes.

Meh. Not much else to report on. On my reading week this next week, so hopefully I can get together with Lennie for a little photo shoot for Black Magazine. I should probably get together with friends from home that I haven't seen in awhile....

Fun Fact of the day: I learned from a girl on my team who's a history buff that Canada's actual name is The Dominion of Canada. England named it that because they didn't want it to seem like Canada was greater than them. Haha. Definitely a fun fact.

only as old as you feel

This was absolutely hilarious and so sweet!! I want to be cool like this when I'm old. They've been married 62 years, he just turned 90 and this was at a clinic where they spotted a piano!

ms. anne

Saw Prov's theatre production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" tonight. Have to be honest, had me teared up a few times... They really did a good job! (Also, props to my aunt and uncle who are are in charge of the make-up and technical crew, respectively).

Also makes me want to get back into a theatre production. Kinda miss it.

we are the world

I was shown this today. I know they're both significantly long, but find some time to watch this!

Back in the 80s, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie got together to write a song for Africa and was performed by all the who's-who of that era, which include names like Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springstein, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Billy Joel, Huey Lewis, and Willie Nelson (to name a few).

This first vid here is the original "We are the World."
The second video here is the remake made just recently that was played for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in honour of Haiti. This remake also has the who's-who of musical artists, except for our era. Clearly its meant to appeal to all sorts of age categories as there are some random combo's of people and styles, but it's still pretty fun to see who's all in it!

Try and see how many people you can recognize!!

i'm just peachy, thank you!

Never fails. EVERY basketball season (and I mean EVERY) I'll get one of these bad boys on one, if not both, of my arms. Check out proof of last years bruise. The one pictured above in particular is actually the second one of this season. No wait, 3rd, since I had one on both arms previously. Those few bruises are just a sample of what I've got, you should check out my other arm and knees....

LOVE IT!
(Does that make me thug?)

february funk

Went for biscuits and tea (<--insert British accent) with my girl Meg today and we both decided it's definitely the time of The February Funk. Ya know, that time where it's the middle of winter and everything just seems to be on autopilot. It is absolutely time for something new and exciting to happen pronto! I'll be in the city this weekend, so if people want to make something exciting happen, you just let me know and I will be DOWN. Also, for my Journalism class, I need to do an assignment where I write about an event that occurs that I happen to participate in. It'd be nice to write about something exciting!

Side note: I'll definitely be excited when Gossip Girl airs again in March! Don't make fun haha. Someone else shares my excitement for this:
Sometimes I wonder why I don't just ditch school right now and travel! No chance of a February Funk there! But with only approximately 2.5 months left til I graduate, the logical part of my brain takes over...

For now, I'll just get my hair did.

Fun Fact of the day: Just saw on the news that a man was pulled from the rubble of the Haiti earthquakes ALIVE after 27 days! Wowza!

lesson to be learned!

Can I just say one thing that REALLY annoys me? Walking through wind and snow and you kind of lose your balance and you are fighting to regain some sort of centre all the while still trying to move forward through awkward piles of drifting snow so you end up realizing that your track of footprints looks like someone's been into the wine cellar one too many times that day.

It's funny-annoying. Must look absolutely retarded to anyone seeing this unfold, but just a complete waste of energy to the victim (aka ME...all the time).

Speaking of winter mishaps. This weekend on my basketball road trip, I was sleeping and my feet were resting on a teammates lap across the aisle of the bus. As I was drifting off to sleep, I began to dream.

Didn't get too far in that dream though: I ended up twitch-kicking my leg so hard that I jolted awake and sat up and all I exclaimed in explanation was, "I SLIPPED ON ICE!" Gosh it's so stupid when that happens haha.

Seriously, though, watching people try not to fall on ice is one of the funniest things to me. I'm chuckling now as I type this. Especially when it's people who think they're just sooooo cool. There is no hope on this earth that one can look "cool" while flailing their body around trying to stay upright on ice. It truly is a humbling experience!

Although this reminds me one time a couple of years ago. As funny as slipping is, there's one thing that I can't handle: elderly people falling. It actually physically pains my heart to see old people get hurt.

This one evening, my family I were coming out of the Centennial Concert Hall after a concert and as we were walking down the stairs outside the building, I heard my parents call for my sister and I who had been a few paces ahead of them. We turn around and this old lady had slipped and fallen head first down the concrete stairs!! My mom was right there and began to compress the wound on her head with a scarf another lady had tossed her. Honestly, it looked like she had been shot, that's how much blood there was! Sorry for those of you reading this that can't handle this visual...
Oh man, it was so hard to see. An ambulance was there in a bit to take her away.
I still wonder about that lady...

Moral of the story: Tread lightly & carefully!

STELLAAAA

Spent the day in the city today. Got my Achilles checked out at Legacy Sports Medicine. Didn't really tell me anything I didn't know, but I got referred to physio for ultra-sound (weird, didn't think I'd be having ultra-sound so soon in my life...!).

Went for lunch at Stella's Cafe. Honestly, one of my favourite joints to eat. Everything is just so...GOOD. I even look forward to simply eating their bread. LOVE their bread. And homemade jam.
Browsed The Exchange again as well (I would love to renovate some of those shops into a studio apartment pour moi).

Afternoon snack: soy chai latte courtesy of S-bux (I caved again, Lennie).

Chilled out some more before I headed to get groceries (damn those over-priced produce) and then headed back to my little humble abode in the woods.

But wait!

I had to finish an assignment before I went to bed which I had to relocate myself to the main school building for as soon as I got back. This took more time than I wanted to give.

Again, came back to my little nook after finishing said assignment.

And now I realize I will be going to bed with no supper...
